The work of Witten and Polchinski has established detailed models for the vibrations of one-brane strings stuck by their end points to a two-braner. At the same time, Hooft and Susskind’s investigations into holography have achieved a full mathematical description for three dimensional physics illuminating a phantasmagoria of a “solid universe” from processes taking place on a distant two-dimensional surface. This holographic principle suggests how richly-structured higher-dimensional entities — complete with dark eyes, sexuality and death — may in fact be the elaborate ghosts of a captured flatness.
